Franco Appiah

Franco Appiah, 31, Collection merchandiser at Casablanca Paris, previous experience: Designer

What got you into your job?

I remember watching an Armani show while I was still in school, and that moment made me realize I wanted to work in fashion. At the time, I was studying graphic design, so I completed that first and then moved on to study fashion.

How did you experience fashion growing up?

I did not have much growing up, but we also did not need much. I am very grateful to my godparent, who would pass down designer clothes when they no longer wanted them. Sundays were special, a lot of care went into how we dressed, usually in a suit and tie or a shirt and tie. On a daily basis, I was simply wearing what I had and making it work. Fashion was not something I was deeply into.

How has your upbringing influenced the way you see fashion?

My upbringing taught me to appreciate what I have and to be resourceful. It shaped my understanding that style is not about having more, but about making the most of what you have and wearing it with intention.

Talk us through your role as a collection merchandiser for Casablanca Paris?

As a Collection Merchandiser, I analyse the market and keep track of what competitors are doing. I work closely with the designers to ensure there is a strong balance between runway and commercial products. I also present the collection to both wholesale and retail teams, then I make sure the final product is positioned and communicated clearly to the customer.

Tell us a 'i made it' moment for you in your career so far...

Every day feels like an “I made it” moment. It may sound simple, but considering where I started, I never take my position for granted.

What does pressure look like in your job and how do you deal with it?

:) :) :) that’s all

What brings you happiness in your work?

I choose to create my own happiness by maintaining a positive mindset, because realistically, most of us work as a necessity rather than pure enjoyment.

Underrated fashion icon you admire right now?

Honestly, no one. Everyone has their own taste, and many draw inspiration from others. If I could wear a zip up hoodie, a T shirt, and joggers every day, I would not mind, and I feel like I am slowly getting there.

Where would you advise men to get their style inspiration and information from?

They should start with what feels comfortable to them. Look around, observe what you like, and take inspiration from that rather than following trends blindly...

What is one thing you would advise someone looking to get into the industry?

Do not stop having fun. Hold on to the joy you had before starting, because people and the industry can sometimes take that away if you let them.

What do you think matters too much in fashion right now?

In reality, not much truly matters in fashion. It can often act as a distraction from what is happening in the world. When a brand becomes too serious or real, people tend to move on quickly.
